VANCOUVERDESI.COM EVENTS BLOGPOST: Need a good laugh? Hollywood Harv and Friends can help!

Comedian Harv Puni, better known as Hollywood Harv to his fans, is a pretty funny guy.  He’s performed over 400 sold out comedy shows throughout the United States, England, India and across Canada and he has also MC’d concerts for world-class artists such as Destiny’s Child, Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas and JT Money just to name a few. His June performance at the Vogue Theatre was a big hit and now he would like to thank his dedicated fans for their ongoing support.

Harv and a few of his fellow comedians are putting on a show, and it’s completely FREE!! That’s right. FREE. He’s calling it fan appreciation day. So whether you’ve seen Harv perform before or not, you have no excuse not to show up! Did I mention there are $4.95 pints and $13.95 pitchers? Two more reasons why Mavericks is the place to be this Thursday night!

To find out more about Hollywood Harv, visit his website at www.hollywoodharv.ca. His latest DVD is also available for purchase on his website for just $5.

VANCOUVERDESI.COM EVENTS BLOGPOST: Bhangra Idols Dance Competition, Oct. 7, 2012

Ok Bhangra lovers, if you’re looking to see some serious dance moves, you’re in luck because Vancouver’s biggest and longest-running Bhangra competition, Bhangra Idols is taking place in less than one week. 6 Senior teams and 8 Junior Bhangra Teams will compete for the title of Bhangra Idol: The Best of the Best & Junior’s Best, respectively.

Paji Guys Entertainment usually hosts two major competitions each year. The first is the Best in the West, which took place on May 12, 2012. The top 4 teams from Best in the West automatically qualify for Bhangra Idols: The Best of the Best. Throw in a couple of out-of-town teams from Boston and Edmonton and you’ve got yourself a fierce competition.

This year, a junior category has also been added, which is a great goal to work towards for the thousands of youth who learn Bhangra in the lower mainland. Interest in Bhangra has been rising exponentially over the past 10 years, to the point where there are dozens of academies that offer Bhangra lessons. There’s even an annual festival dedicated to Bhangra called VIBC – Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration.

I’ll be there next Sunday, and I hope to see you there as well!

Here’s what you need to know:

Here’s a YouTube clip of the winners from last year, Vancity Bhangra, just to give you a taste!

By the way, if you’d like to learn Bhangra or any other form of South Asian dance or music, I also run an organization called South Asian Arts that offers classes and accredited high school programs as well. About half of the dancers on Vancity Bhangra are from our company. Visit www.southasianarts.ca for more details!
